Letter from the President – Summer 2017

It’s hard to believe but summer is almost upon us!  I know that for some of us, it’s a distant goal to take a vacation especially when we are all putting in extra hours during this ‘budget season’.  I, for one, am looking forward to some R&R on beaches with blue skies and water and lots of sunshine! I’m in a summer state of mind!

As you’ll see from the highlights in this edition of the newsletter, the 2017 Annual Conference -hosted by Cleveland County was a success! Thank you again to our host April Crotts and her staff for devoting their time and efforts towards the conference.  Hosting an annual conference is a tremendous undertaking and we sincerely appreciate anyone who has ever taken this on.  I’m looking forward to visiting Pinehurst for our 2018 Annual Conference.  Moore County Clerk/Vice President Laura Williams is excited to be hosting the conference and showing off her county.  Please pencil in March 21-23, 2018. More details will be coming later in the year.

The Regional Workshops will be the next opportunity to get important and useful information to help us serve our counties.  The Western Regional will be hosted by Ashe County (Ashe County Clerk Ann Clark) on September 29, 2017.  The Piedmont Regional will be hosted by Chatham County (Chatham County Clerk Lindsay Ray) on October 6, 2017.  The Eastern Regional is being hosted by Pender County (Pender County Clerk Melissa Long) on October 20, 2017.  Please make sure to share ideas for educational topics with Vice President and Program Committee Chair Laura Williams.  Our workshops, schools, and annual conferences are for your benefit and we want to make sure that the educational sessions are meaningful and worthwhile to everyone. Thank you to everyone that has already shared ideas!

I would like to also remind our new clerks that we do have a Mentor Program. The Mentor Program is a wonderful initiative that pairs newer clerks with veteran clerks in an effort to share information and support.  If there are any clerks that would like to be paired with a mentor, please do not hesitate to contact me.  And if you are a veteran clerk that would like to be a mentor, please let me know and I will add you to the list.  Thank you to all those that have already volunteered to be a mentor!  This is truly a great way to give back to the Association as well as make a lifelong friend.

I hope everyone can attend the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Conference being held in Durham County at the Durham Convention Center August 10-13, 2016.  We will be having our next Business Meeting that Friday, August 11th from 10:45–11:45 a.m. Once I have a room assignment, I will send that out on the Listserv.

I hope everyone has a fabulous summer & is able to enjoy some family FUN & SUN! The tans may fade but the memories will last forever! E~N~J~O~Y!
